OCTOBER 26, 1984: MSR debuts WhisperLite™ Stove, the most advanced liquid fuel stove
New stove poised to become the standard in liquid fuel backpacking equipment
SEATTLE, Wash. (October 26, 1984)— Seattle-based Mountain Safety Research® (MSR®), the leader in durable and reliable mountaineering equipment, introduces the WhisperLite™ Stove, a powerful, efficient, and compact liquid fuel stove allowing mountaineers to achieve the same performance in the wind and cold as expedition stoves, but with less weight.
“The challenge was to design a lightweight, compact stove that burns cleanly and quietly,” says Larry Penberthy, MSR Founder. “The solution? The WhisperLite Stove. It offers MSR quality and performance for a price of less than $40 suggested retail.”
The stove has a special ported burner for a quieter flame. Its legs form large, steady pot supports, but fold flat to store compactly inside most MSR cooksets with room to spare. Durable stainless steel and brass construction deliver dependable performance in most situations.
The new MSR Shaker Jet™ technology allows the stove to clean itself with a simple shake, without the need for disassembly or tools. As the stove burns, its small fuel opening can naturally become clogged by pieces of unvaporized, solidified fuel. The shaker jet is a weighted needle inside the jet -- when the stove is on, fuel flows around the needle, but when the stove is off, it can be inverted or shaken, and the needle will push debris through the jet’s opening.
MSR Quality Ensures Stove will Endure Decades of Use
To ensure that the MSR WhisperLite will endure decades of use in the backcountry, every MSR stove undergoes a series of strict quality control tests. One of the most critical is a two-part test performed on the fuel delivery system, including the fuel line, generator tube, elbow, and jet. First, each unit is placed under water and filled with pressurized air to check for leaks and to check the flow rate of the jet. Each unit is then burn tested with fuel at both high and low pressure to check for correct flame output and proper fuel vaporization.
The stove is also designed such that every part is accessible and replaceable, making the MSR WhisperLite easy to repair and maintain in the field. Maintenance kits are available for the stove, allowing you to clean and repair your MSR WhisperLite wherever you go. This total field maintainability means that you can count on your MSR stove to last a lifetime.
Includes fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small parts kit, instructions, and a stuff sack.
